ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team defeated Utah State Wednesday night 73 to 70. The win ended a three game losing streak for the Lobos and improved their Mountain West record to 5-6. The Lobos are 12-10 overall.

The Lobos found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard in the fourth quarter but, rallied to pull ahead. Defensive post play by former Santa Fe St. Michael’s star Alexa Chavez was key down the stretch. Chavez has brought an enforcer type presence to the Lobos since returning from an achilles injury.

Lobos guard Cherise Beynon scored 24 points in the win. Lobos forward Khadijah Shumpert poured in 17 points. The Lobos will host San Jose State Saturday.
