ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)– The Minnesota Golden Gophers came to WisePies Arena AKA The Pit Tuesday night and got their revenge against the Lobo women’s basketball team. The 69-65 victory looked settled by the fourth quarter. Minnesota built up a 14 point lead and looked as if they would put the game on cruise control.

The Lobos had other plans, turning a 14 point deficit into a one possession game. With 40 seconds left to play, the Lobos still had a shot at pulling off the upset but, Minnesota stayed composed to close the Lobos out and leave Albuquerque with a victory. Minnesota star guard Carlie Wagner turned in a double, double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Her teammate Kenisha Bell led the Golden Gophers in scoring with 15 points.

Lobos center Richelle Van Der Keilj lead the charge for the cherry and silver, scoring 16 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Guard Cherise Beynon followed up a 32 point performance over the weekend with 12 points and 14 assists. Guard Jayda Bovero was the only other Lobo in double figures with 10 points. She was three of six from the three point line. The Lobos knew they needed to score to beat Minnesota and got off to a good start.

By the second quarter the Lobos were cold shooting only 20 percent for the quarter. The Lobos only trailed by three points at halftime but, could never overtake the Gophers in the second half. With the loss the Lobos drop to 3-5. They will host the UTEP Miners Sunday at WisePies Arena AKA The Pit at 2 p.m.
