ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.(KRQE)-Ray Birmingham and his University of New Mexico baseball team didn’t leave anything to chance in the Mountain West Tournament Championship game Saturday. The Lobos took their fate into their own hands with a 14-4, ten run rule, 7th inning victory over the Nevada Wolfpack.

The victory earned the Lobos an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, a place the Lobos haven’t been since 2013. The win was another feather in the cap of coach Birmingham who has led the Lobos to six Mountain West titles in his 9 seasons with the team. Birmingham has a career Lobo won loss record of 308-222. That number is 11 shy of the winningest coach in Mountain West history.

The Lobos will be headed to their 5th regional under coach Birmingham and he knows exactly where he would like to go. “I want to go to Lubbock,” said Birmingham. “Lubbock fits our team. I don’t want to go to the coast. I am tired of going to the coast. We always go to the coast and I don’t want to go to Tempe’s yard because the wind blows in at mach 9. I don’t want that either. I don’t need any wind. I just don’t want it blowing in. I want somewhere that matches our team.”

The Lobos will find out where they are headed and who they will play during Monday morning’s selection show.
