SANTA FE (KRQE) – The House Aggies’ luck ran out as the Senate Lobos fought through two overtimes to extend their winning streak in the annual charity basketball game between the two chambers.
The Senate’s 32-29 third straight win in the series came after they were able to hit enough free throws in the second overtime at Santa Fe High. The game’s top scorer, Sen. Howie Morales, D-Silver City, topped off his 13 point night with two late free throws. He also had all 8 first half points for the Senate. Other top Senate scorers included Sen. Bill O’Neill, D-Albuquerque, with 7 points and Sen. John Sapien, D-Corrales, with 6 points.
House players had their chances late, with Rep. Bill McCamley, D-Las Cruces, unable to convert on a couple of three point looks. But earlier, the House benefitted from a clutch shot as Rep. G. Andres Romero, D-Albuquerque, sunk a long two point shot to tie up the game at 25 as time ran out in regulation. Romero led all House scorers with 8 points, but Rep. James R.J. Strickler, R-Farmington, and McCamley also chipped in 6 points each.
The game’s big winner was the UNM Cancer Center as the even raised $22,347 for cancer treatment and research.
