ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It looks like New Mexico State is committed to competing at the FBS level in college football. For now, the plan will be to compete as an independent in 2018 when the Aggies membership with the Sun Belt Conference expires at the end of the 2017 season.

Idaho, who also did not have their membership renewed by the Sun Belt Conference, opted to drop down to FCS for the 2018 season just two days ago.

NMSU Board of Regents Chairperson Debra Hicks told the Las Cruces Sun that regents voted to stay the course with FBS back in May of 2013. She went on to say that resolution will be reaffirmed.

A review committee researching which way the Aggies should go with football found that the school could lose over 2 million dollars in guaranteed money from games against big FBS schools, if they made the change to FCS.

The Aggies review committee still has to consider what to do with the other sports at the school. Whether to stay in the Western Athletic Conference where they currently reside, or make a move.
