ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Amber Campbell is heading into the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil after posting one of her best hammer throws. Campbell had a toss of 242 feet and 10 inches to win the Olympic trails.
The 35-year-old who got her love for sports while growing up in Tucumcari, New Mexico is getting better with age.
“It just keeps getting better,” said Campbell. “You know every year I have been able to get better. At this stage in the game, to know what I know, have the experience that I do. I feel real confident going into Rio.”
Campbell is going to her third Olympics. She has had plenty of success at track and field competitions all over the world. A medal at the Olympics has eluded her. She was so close in 2012.
“In the Olympic finals they only take 12 women out of all of the women that are eligible to go,” said Campbell. I placed 13th and was the first one to not make the final. That was a little devastating.”
Campbell has a lot of support heading into the games especially from the town of Tucumcari.
“It means the world to me, to know that so many people support me from Tucumcari,” said Campbell. “It’s awesome. That’s where I began sports. That’s where I fostered my love for competition of every sport. I always thankful to them and the city of Tucumcari for getting that spark and desire in me.”
Campbell leaves for Rio August 7. Her first competition is August 12.
